A week ago, Friday I hopped on a plane to Scotland via Heathrow airport in London. If you have a choice to skip that airport, I will highly recommend it. I almost did not make the connection flight, but I did, and my bags made it too.
I was golfing with three retired partners from CLA, and we stayed at the Fairmont hotel at St. Andrews.
On the first day we played the St. Andrews Castle course which is their newest course and that was the only day that we had rain but only for about five holes, but it was rainy and windy during that time. On the first tee I just about had my driver fly out of my hands.
The second day we played the Old Course which is the birthplace of golf. The course is very playable and easy to walk, and my caddie had caddied for Seve Ballesteros when he won the Open. I played fairly well and actually had a couple of birdies and had a great shot out of one of their pot bunkers from 130 yards to about five feet away.
The third day we played Kingsbarns which is a very new course and looks more like a US course than the typical links course in Scotland. Again, I played well (for me) and had a great time.
The fourth day we played Carnoustie which is commonly referred to as Carnastie, however, I played really well that day and only had two holes that were not that enjoyable. This was likely my favorite course of all.
The last day we played Dumbarnie which is a newer course like Kingbarns. I probably played my best golf on this course and shot an 80 which for me is very good and that included two triple bogies. The issue on this course was the green grass in the rough not the bunkers.
All-in-all, I had a great time and my clubs, and I made it home safely on Saturday and now I am trying to get caught up.
We will keep you posted.
