The IRS recently dropped significant updates to Fact Sheet 2026-02, detailing how they are moving full-steam ahead with Executive Order 14247 to modernize payments.

The End of the Paper Refund
The IRS essentially stopped issuing paper refund checks for individuals back in September 2025. While there are very narrow exceptions for legal requirements or extreme hardship, the default is now exclusively electronic.
