No More Paper Checks for Tax Payments
Starting September 30, 2025, the Government will not accept checks for payments of estimated taxes and income taxes. Maybe!
Certain hardships may apply but in today’s financial environment, the US government may try to restrict or eliminate almost all hardships since almost everyone can access these payments. For example, Direct Deposits can be received at any financial institution accessible by online or mobile banking; to a Direct Express card; or to a digital wallet app on a smartphone offered by a non-bank. However, making certain payments to the government might be a little more complicated if you do not have a bank account. All income tax payments can be made via DirectPay or EFTPS.
As a farmer who is used to only sending paper checks for payments, it might take a little bit of time to get used to making these payments via ACH, etc. but after doing it once or twice, it will become routine.
For several years, I have paid all of my income tax estimates and tax payments via EFTPS. It allows me to schedule multiple estimates or change my mind if I need to update them, etc.
Treasury is still in the process of providing additional guidance on this and final implementation may get delayed a bit, but get ready, it will happen.
We will keep you posted.
I love this option but if I have a minor under 16 last year I couldn’t pay digitally. I had to send in paper copys of return to Feds and Paper copy as well as a paper check to state of IL. think this will be fixed?
