The Senate last Friday passed the Social Security Fairness Act.
Although for all non-government taxpayers it is really not that fair since it provides benefits to government workers that others will not qualify for. But let’s dig into the details.
Social security had major amendments back in the 1980s and two of these provisions were the Windfall Elimination and Government Pension Offset. These two provisions were added to make government workers who did not participate in social security on a more equal standing with those who did participate. In both cases, each provision reduced the amount of social security benefits that a government worker could receive, however, this reduction was designed to make them more equal with non-governmental workers.
